Scottish Outside Broadcast Technical & Engineering Traineeship Supported by Screen Scotland QTV is pleased to launch its third consecutive Screen Scotland supported traineeship. QTV is looking for an individual to join them for a 10-month paid programme which will train them to be multi-skilled in technical and engineering roles within outside broadcast.

Programme Outline

The programme centres around a 10-month placement based at QTV headquarters in Baillieston, Glasgow. The successful candidate will start the programme shadowing QTV staff on events, and working in a supportive capacity with equipment and OB facilities to learn various engineering and technical roles from end to end. Once assessed as capable, the candidate will continue their learning through supported, hands-on experience on events, growing their competencies and experience to allow independent working.

The programme benefits from opportunities for the trainee to gain a breadth of experience on a multitude of sporting and live events. Additionally, real-time experience with secondment partners across the industry will widen the trainees’ understanding of outside broadcast.

The trainee will be supported through ongoing mentoring with the goal that they will be ready to work independently as a freelancer by the end of the programme.

Key Responsibilities/Learning

    • Provide support in the set up and breakdown of equipment both on location and at base.

  • Ability to escalate problems effectively, and ensure clear communication to all.
  • Develop a good technical understanding of all equipment owned and used by QTV as well as the capabilities and limitations of its technical systems.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines, especially when working in dynamic environments. Who’s it for? QTV is seeking a candidate who already has demonstrable experience in technical roles within the media or sports industry, or who has transferable skills from other compatible sectors.

Desirable skills:

  • A desire to work in outside broadcast and learn multiple skills related to the technical delivery of an OB.
  • Candidates should be able to demonstrate an interest in technology or electronic engineering.
  • Organise their own workload effectively.

  • They must have excellent spoken English.
  • Have a keen interest in client relations with strong interpersonal skills, and feel confident both on the phone and in person dealing with external suppliers, colleagues, and clients. An appetite to develop skills in this area is acceptable.

QTV is dedicated in its pursuit of excellence and creating diversity within the UK’s outside broadcast industry and welcomes applications from groups which are currently under-represented in the industry.

Research has consistently shown that women, individuals from the LGBTQ+ community, those from ethnically diverse and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, and individuals with health conditions or impairments often hesitate to apply for positions unless they perfectly match every qualification. At QTV, we’re committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workforce. If you’re enthusiastic about this role but your previous experience doesn’t align perfectly with every requirement in the job description, we strongly encourage you to apply anyway. You might be exactly the candidate we’re looking for.
