About The Role

QTV is expanding its team and looking to hear from experienced Audio Guarantee professionals across Scotland and the North of England. We have multiple opportunities, including freelance, fixed-term, and permanent roles, for individuals passionate about delivering high-quality audio in live sports broadcasting. As an Audio Guarantee, you will play a crucial role in ensuring seamless audio delivery for sporting events both on-site and from gallery, managing complex technical setups, troubleshooting in live environments, and maintaining broadcast excellence. The perfect candidate will be enthusiastic about using new technical solutions to deliver high-quality audio across a variety of outputs and will be familiar with both linear and non-linear broadcast operations. Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Setup & Operations: Lead the setup and configuration of all audio equipment, including mixing consoles, RF systems, comms, and microphones for live productions.
  • Live Event Management: Monitor and manage all live broadcast audio feeds, ensuring consistent quality and synchronisation across multiple sources.
  • Fault Diagnosis & Resolution: Rapidly identify and resolve any technical issues before and during live broadcasts to prevent downtime.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with directors, producers, vision engineers, and commentary teams to achieve the best possible audio mix.
  • RF & Comms Management: Oversee RF frequency coordination and ensure clear communication between production teams via intercom systems.
  • Equipment Maintenance & Upkeep: Perform routine checks, maintenance, and software updates on all audio hardware to ensure reliability.
  • Innovation & Best Practices: Keep up to date with the latest advancements in audio broadcasting technology and implement best practices to enhance production quality.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all audio operations adhere to broadcast industry standards, health and safety regulations, and RF licensing requirements.

Essential Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in live broadcast audio, with expertise in both traditional and emerging technologies. Key areas of experience include:

  • Audio Systems & Quality Assurance:
    • Strong understanding of audio control systems (preferably Ross) and broadcast audio standards (Dante, MADI, RF).
    • Expertise in audio desk configuration, particularly with Allen & Heath and Calrec consoles.
    • Proven ability to assess and optimise audio quality, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Broadcast & Technical Knowledge:
    • Understanding of vision control systems.
    • Familiarity with camera systems (Sony, Grass Valley) and their integration into OB workflows.
    • Knowledge of third-party control systems (TSL, VSM, Cerebrum) for managing complex broadcast environments.
  • Communication & Intercom Systems:
    • Experience with intercom systems and architecture (RTS, RVON), ensuring clear communication across production teams and referees..
  • Networking & Signal Routing:
    • Strong understanding of network architecture, broadcast line-up procedures, and troubleshooting techniques.
    • Proficiency in routing audio and video signals, ensuring seamless integration across various production elements.
  • Streaming & Emerging Technologies:
    • Basic knowledge of streaming protocols and technologies (LiveU, Mobile Viewpoint, H.264, H.265, SRT, SST, RTMP) for live production workflows.

The successful candidate will be highly adaptable, solutions-focused, and comfortable working under pressure in fast-paced live sports environments. A passion for cutting-edge broadcast technologies and an eagerness to drive innovation in live sports audio are essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree or certification in Audio Engineering, Broadcast Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience working with international sports federations or major broadcasters.
  • RF Coordination and/or Dante Certification is a plus.

This role is crucial in ensuring the smooth execution of live production operations, from pre-production planning to post-event wrap-up. The successful candidate should be based in the North of England within commuting distance to Leeds. 

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with production managers, direct live camera feeds, manage technical equipment, and lead a dedicated crew to deliver high-quality live content. They’ll play a vital role in troubleshooting technical issues, maintaining equipment, and ensuring seamless production across various platforms. This is a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, where adaptability, problem-solving skills, and excellent communication are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate effectively with the QTV production managers to coordinate pre-production planning.
  • Direct multiple live cameras as well as capture and play out replays
  • Manage and direct the activities of crew, communicating effectively to ensure smooth and safe operations.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot technical equipment before, during, and after live productions.
  • Work closely with the technical team to ensure good operation of all equipment. Successful applicants will be expected to take responsibility for preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and updates.
  • Ensure proper integration of test systems for live production equipment.
  • Utilise problem-solving skills to address equipment failures and unforeseen challenges promptly.
  • Minimise loss of service when equipment fails by quickly identifying and implementing alternative methods of service provision.
  • Ensure safe and secure operation of QTV depot, adhering to all QTV health and safety, and other relevant company policies or processes.
  • Efficiently manage equipment repairs, equipment hires, and advise on equipment requirements.
  • Keep abreast of trends, best practices, evolving technology and innovative solutions in the industry to advise the senior management team of future needs and resources.
